Real Weddings - Rowan & Ellie
It’s odd sometimes to look at past weddings - they can seem like a different lifetime, but also just like they were yesterday. It’s great to remember the couples, their love and excitement, and their joy when they see their flowers and a dream realised. With it potentially being a little while until my next wedding, I wanted to take some time to self-indulge in some of my favourite weddings of the past, what flowers we used and how we got to the final floral-filled day. I hope this might become a mini-series that not only satisfies my need for nostalgia, but also gives you some insight and inspiration - not to mention JOY - too!
Today, I wanted to throw it back to the last wedding I did pre-lockdown, which, even though it was only in February, feels like otherworldly somehow. I am lucky enough to have known Ellie since we were teenagers, and having seen her grow and flourish into the amazing wonderful powerhouse woman she is, it was a total honour to be asked to provide her and Rowan’s wedding flowers.
With their date being in February, they leaned towards a more wintery palette, with deep reds, blues and whites being the main palette, with lots of wild grey foliage. With Ellie’s mood board, she had included many bouquets that featured flowers that were going to be in season during her big day - which is always such a relief for a florist to see! Anemones, Ranunculus, Thistles were bursting out of every photo, and so became the focal point for me to work around. We paired these with Veronica and Astrantia, and packed it full of foliages to make it rich with texture. As with another wedding I did last year (coming to this blog soon), we made a last minute decision to include some long flowing ribbons, so during their first look in the park, they would add some movement to the photos.
As a surprise for her Hen Do, I made Ellie a mini flower crown to make her feel like a real queen for the day. As soon as it was on her head, from the smile that adorned her face, we both knew we had to have one to top off her Bridal look on her big day - it worked with her pixie cut so beautifully. It was simply made with a mix of waxflower, mini ferns and eucalyptus, bound with white ribbon we also used for the bouquets.
For the bridesmaids, we wanted to keep it simple but fashionable to match their chic all black outfits (obsessed with this trend). We made handheld mixes of anemones, lisianthus and waxflower, all in white, surrounded by different foliages - eucalyptus and ferns. Bound in the same white satin ribbon to tie it is with the bridal bouquet, they looked amazing all together alongside beautiful Bride Ellie. We didn’t forget the boys, and they’re dapper suits were topped off with buttonholes of waxflower and ferns, fixed with pearl headed pins onto their lapels.
And with all of the blooms dropped off at Bridal HQ in East London that morning, I was done, and ready to settle myself in to watch Ellie and Rowan begin their journey into married life. I’d like to end on the lovely words from the couple themselves, as it’s their opinions at the end of the day which truly matter. Thank you again for letting me be a part of your day E&R - you guys are awesome, and I’m so lucky.
‘Hannah is an artist in the truest sense. She took an idea I had and made it more beautiful than I could ever have gained. Closer to the wedding, we decided to add some colour to the bouquet and two weeks before we decided to add a flower crown. Nothing was too much for her and she delivered a STUNNING array of bouquets, posies and button holes… with calm and ease. I spent the whole day admiring my flowers - they were so beautiful, wild and romantic. I love that Hannah never pushed us to go over budget but was clear about what we could afford. It meant that we could fully enjoy her work without feeling guilty. I would highly recommend Hannah as a florist. She has now worked for a few of our friend’s weddings and has produced completely unique arrangements for every one. She is able to fulfil a huge variety of wishes and designs and that is what makes her a truly excellent wedding florist.’
