Wedding Trends - My Something Blue

Hello and Happy Hump Day (is this still a thing?).
Welcome to the second instalment of my Wedding Trends for 2020 (and with COVID, into 2021 and beyond). With all this time at home, why not begin planning your big day and get dreaming - I hope these posts give you some inspiration if you’re unsure where to begin with the wide world of flowers!

Today we are talking all about COLOUR. More specifically, the big flower colour trend for this year - Blue!
Colour trends seem to change very frequently, but it always seems to correlate with Pantone’s Colour of the Year. With last year’s shade of choice being ‘Living Coral’, we saw a year dominated by tropical trends and clashing brights, experimenting with hot pinks, oranges and yellows. A year that always screamed summer.

This year things are more classic, but still being very mouldable, with Pantone’s ‘Classic Blue’ marking the colour klaxon, being described as ‘a timeless and enduring blue hue’. You’ll probably already be featuring this shade next to your something new, borrowed and old, but why not have it define your event on a greater scale! As much as blue might strike fear into some couples, thinking of it either cold or kitsch, I can argue it is instead incredibly versatile.

As you can see from Lauren & Dom’s wedding we did last September, blue goes so beautifully with white, and there are so many shades you can include. But if you want to warm it up, it also goes so well with peaches, soft yellows and pinks. If you want a more dramatic touch, deep reds and purple tones work perfectly alongside a navy shade. That timeless feel is achieved with whites, sage greens and golds too.

Althought blue is not necessarily an easy colour to come by in flowers - unless dyed to your colour * ahem blue roses * - there are definitely plenty of options. Hydrangeas (see Lauren’s bouquet above), Anemones, Veronica, Delphiniums, Thistles, Corn flowers and Nigella are all blue flowers that florists love to use, as long as the season is right for them, obviously! There are many grey-toned foliage’s too, like dusty miller, eucalyptus and berries that can bring that tone to life within your floral arrangements too.

You don’t have to just include blue in your flowers either! From patterned table clothes (another big trend for this year), to invites and signage, to Bridesmaids, there are so many avenues to bring this theme to your day. Grooms are also seeming to ditch the classic black tux for a navy hue - no less cool, and doesn’t have to be any less formal either. Get your ‘something blue’ with your engagement ring, or your shoes, even your bouquet and buttonhole bindings could be your little blue summin’ summin’.
See below for my Mood Board, filled with images that will hopefully spark a bit of imagination. Blue doesn’t have to be boring, its an endless plethora of shades and tones and it goes with almost ANYTHING. So there’s really nothing stopping you from using the hottest shade of the season.
