Wedding Trends - Go Big or Go Home Bouquets

Congratulations to making it half way through another week of quarantine. This is your weekly reminder that it’s also a Wednesday - you’re welcome!

And welcome to the third instalment of my Wedding Trends for 2020 (and with COVID, into 2021 and beyond). With all this time at home, why not begin planning your big day and get dreaming - I hope these posts give you some inspiration if you’re unsure where to begin with the wide world of flowers!

Today we’re chatting about one of my, and hopefully yours too, favourite topics - BOUQUETS! And how we are shifting into an age of ‘bigger is better’.

Bouquet’s are often the first point of call when couple’s contact me about their wedding flowers, and are usually what defines the floral theme for the day. From wild, to more structured, to flowers used and even binding ribbon colours, they can really complete your final bridal look. With structured and tight bouquets being forever popular, in recent years we’ve seen a shift into bigger, wilder bouquets that are packed with impact.

However, bigger bouquets are all about balance. If you’re having a ball gown style dress, this bouquet style might overwhelm your look, and we don’t want to take the focus away from the glorious and beautiful YOU. Another thing to bare in mind is the flowers you’re choosing, as if you prefer smaller headed blooms, it might end up being a costly choice to opt for a fuller bouquet. Also weight! Going for this trendy larger bouquet obviously means that it will potentially be weightier than other, just as stunning, options. Maybe just do some weight lifting in the weeks leading up to your big day?

My main tips when it comes to your blooming unstructured bouquets are:

- Big Blooms - the more larger headed flowers you incorporate, the bigger the impact. Think Hydrangeas, Protea, Dahlias and Peonies - stunning, structured, scrumptious.

- Mix Your Foliage - did you know there are over 300 types of eucalyptus? There are also millions of grasses and other ferns. Don’t limit yourself to just a few foliages, mixing it up will help create texture, movement and shape instantly. Even if you decide not to have many flowers, this will still create a statement!

- Binding - I’ve had many of my Brides not think about how their bouquet is going to be wrapped and presented on the day, but why not compliment your wild bouquet by adding trailing ribbons in different shades to really help give that ‘I-Just-Threw-This-Together’ look? Maybe mix it up and not use ribbon but instead opt for raffia or string.

- Texture Texture Texture - we’re seeing people move into mixing up fresh and dried flowers, harder blooms with soft, and we LOVE it. It makes for a very dramatic and dynamic bouquet and give you lots of options for the rest of your wedding flowers too. Maybe add in some Pampas Grass, branches or feathers within your bouquet to draw the eye.

- Shape - Now, it might look like there’s not a lot of shape to these kind of bouquets, and isn’t that the point anyway? However, you might want to think about how a more asymmetrical, trailing or a wider bouquet might compliment your dress, and how easy it might be to walk down an aisle with! Some looser shapes are more suited to your look and day than others, and depending on if you are thinking of following tradition and throwing your bouquet, you might want a slightly more firm bouquet so it isn’t too damaged by the landing (or even better, use a Bridesmaids bouquet instead)!

- Price - Now I must warn you, these bouquets can easily get pricey. You can try and get around this by thinking about what flowers are in season, or adding in more foliage.

Have a look below at our mood board of bouquets, maybe save a few as inspiration of your big day!
