Wedding Trends - 70's Flower Bride

Now, when I say 70’s trend, I’m not talking psychedelics, bell bottoms and disco (except for the after after party). When I say 70’s is a new wedding trend, I’m talking more about the move to locally sourced, traditional, raw and natural materials and aesthetics. It links quite nicely to our previous post on Sustainability, and is easy to add into your day on a budget, or even in small doses. You can incorporate it into your dress style, your decoration, your beauty look, as well as the flowers. It’s cool, chic and even though it’s been around for 50 years, it’s forever coming back into style. Here are some of my top tips to get you that 70’s feeling baby!

LIL BIT FLOWER CHILD - Out is the understated bride, and in with opulence. I’m talking eyeshadow, I’m talking flower crowns, I’m talking big eyelashes. Want all eyes to be on you? Then this is a style to embrace. Think seasonal and colourful blooms for your crown, go oversized for that real 70’s impact. Take it to the next level with pearls draped down, and maybe even add in some texture with dried grasses or feathers. Wear traditionally around your head or at the front, like an alice band, for that full 70’s vibe. Think of yourself as the 4th member of Haim and you’re there.

LIL BIT ROCK’N’ROLL - Over the last few years personalised leather jackets have become the must have accessory for your bridal look, but fringing is set to be the new trend going forward. Add it to your boots, your dress and your coat to bring that hippie but cool factor. It’ll add some beautiful texture to your outfit whilst also keeping all ears, as well as eyes, on you as you walk down the aisle.

ALL ABOUT THE DRESS - One of the other big trends for your wedding dress, along with fringing, is big billowing trumpet sleeves and loadsa lace. We’re not talking lace that brings back memories of doilies from your nan’s house, but lace that incorporates shapes, oversized florals and paisley prints. Sleeves, whilst potentially being a nightmare with your wedding breakfast, really encapsulate the boho feel of the era. The more dramatic, the better. Mix and match with silhouettes, off the shoulder styles and draping trains. Jumpsuits rose to new heights of popularity during the era too, so you could throw tradition out the window, be the boss 70’s queen you know you are and rock a killer pant suit.

LIVE WILD - When it comes to your flowers, you can go one of two ways. You can go with all the brights, especially yellows, oranges and blues, reminiscent of the hippie peace movement. Include bright peonies, roses, delphiniums and sunflowers, bursting out wildly from every table centre and bouquet. Alternatively, you can go more subtle, but still stunning, with dried flowers and grasses, think desert bohemian. Pair it with florals toned in the soft pinks, beiges and creams and you’ve got yourself a boho oasis.

TEXTURE, COLOUR, GROOVY - Mix with your chosen blooms above by pairing macramé, crochet, rattan, block colours, wooden beading and textured linens around your venue and decoration as a nod to the time. Maybe swap your classic wedding chairs for oversized rattan style thrones. Pave your aisle with patterned rugs, or change out your table clothes for cream linens and other materials that relate back to the soft colour schemes showcased around your wedding day. Use your backdrop to showcase some crochet or macramé. Texture is your best friend when it comes to embracing the 70’s. Reinvent the chill area by adding a teepee, filled with patterned cushions and rugs, perfect to take a mid-day nap in…

NOTHING BUT GOOD VIBES AND GOOD TUNES - It goes without saying that filling your day with 70’s disco sing-a-long classics will bring only good vibes. My recommendations are: September - Earth, Wind and Fire, Dancing Queen - Abba, Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bohemium Rhapsody - Queen and OF COURSE, Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours - Stevie Wonder.

Here’s my favourite inspiration posts of this trend, do you love it as much as me?!
